bullet Our Philosophy

BeeBoppers classes are developmentally appropriate, research-based classes designed to nurture all areas of a child’s development, including cognitive, language, physical, emotional, and social development - all in a musical context.  We believe that music should be a daily part of a child’s life, so home materials and parent participation are key elements of the program.  We know that the parent is the child's best teacher.  Classes emphasize process over performance, and foster creativity rather than thwarting enthusiasm by making demands on children that are not age-appropriate.

Our Teachers

Brandon Cockburn - Percussion

Brandon Cockburn is a recent addition to the Anchorage community having moved to Alaska in December of 2005. He grew up in the New Orleans,La area and relocated to Anchorage in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Brandon has been involved in drums and percussion since the age of 5, and has performed professionally since the age of 11. He participated in the school band programs from 5th grade until graduation from Mandeville High School in Mandeville,La. He was enrolled in the Talented Music Program at MHS, which involved working in various ensembles including Jazz Combos, Percussion Ensembles, Symphonic and Solo performances, and a multitude of different competitions and performances abroad. Being in school marching bands opened up the interest to march in the Drum and Bugle Corps. He participated during the summers starting after his junior year of high school. Brandon marched with the Phantom Regiment of Rockford,IL and performed around the nation and internationally for thousands. Growing up in the New Orleans music community was a great advantage for any learning musician. It was at an early age when Brandon realized his preference for jazz, funk, soul, and all the eclectic sounds that the New Orleans culture produces. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg,Ms and majored in Music Education and Jazz Studies. He was involved in the Pride Marching Band, Jazz Lab 1, Percussion Ensemble, the Steel Drum Band, the Salsa Band, The Wind Ensemble, the Symphony and various student jazz combos. Brandon has studied under various educators in different areas of the percussion field, and would like to pass along the knowledge gained and discovered over the years to younger generations of aspiring musicians. The main focus of his lessons will be on fundamentals above all else. Developing the basic techniques properly will allow for more musical freedom and enjoyment in the long run. Lessons will be given on Snare Drum where students will learn to read music and learn various techniques that apply to playing percussion instruments. Also lessons on the Drum Kit will help develop hand-foot coordination, and learn the building blocks of different rhythm styles. Brandon lives and performs professionally in the Anchorage area, as well as around the state.

"I am very happy to be a part of Bee Boppers. I embrace the idea of making music fun first, and then helping to guide young musicians during their musical education."
